America's Food Relation in Cloudy with a Change of Meatballs
Over the last few decades, people have developed a distorted mindset regarding food. Rather than eating to live, people now live to eat. The American culture has greatly publicized that bigger is better through a variety of media outlets such as commercials, billboards and advertisements. For example, companies have begun producing king size candy bars that is typically double the normal serving size. The kid-friendly movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, is a perfect allegory of America’s relation to food. Too much of anything is not good, especially when it comes to food. America has come to rely on fast food chains and processed foods to provide meals rather than taking the time to cook. Studies indicate that too much of these foods often lead to obesity. Unfortunately, more than one third of American adults are obese. We have learned that obesity can also cause several other health problems such as strokes, diabetes, heart disease, and the list goes on.
The movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, is about a man named Flint Lockwood who dreams of becoming a well- respected scientist. Flint desires to create an amazing experiment so that everyone will like him. The community is on the verge of economic failure and only has sardines left as a source of food. Flint decides he is going to save his community by building a machine that produces processed food, but like all of his other experiments, this particular experiment takes a turn for the worst. The food processor machine, also known as the “Flint Lockwood Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator,” spins out of control and flies into the sky and starts raining food. Luckily, Flint is able to send food requests based on what the community wants from his lab computer.
