Emu
Emu's are large distinctive animals. Their not a common bird that most people think of. I decided to write about an emu, due to the fact that when I was younger this was one of the pets I had growing up. Our emu's name was Ellie, she was not the nicest animal, she was a DIVA that wanted to be left alone. Ellie got pleasure from escaping from her fenced in pasture to chase cars down the some what busy country road. It was not unusual for us to receive a phone call from the county sheriff notifying us that Ellie had escaped from her pasture.
Emu's are Australia's tallest native bird and they are the second tallest existing bird in the world by height. Emu's are flightless birds, they have long necks and long legs. Emu's legs are powerful, they use their strong legs to take long stride while running. They are fast, they can run up to almost 31 mph. Emu's are not social birds! They have great eye sight and hearing, and they are very alert.
The diet for these guy's vary. Emu's enjoy eating insects such as grasshoppers, ants, caterpillars, they also eat certain plants but it depends on the season. One strange thing they enjoy eating is charcoal. Emu's are known for getting out of there fence, so if your a farmer then be careful for your wheat crop. They are also know for eating fruits and other crops as well.
Farmers generally have Emu's on their farm for their meat, oil and leather that they produce. Emu's leather has a very unique pattern and is used to make a variety of items but mostly for wallets and shoes.
